The San Francisco 49ers have had a drama-filled offseason and gamblers have taken notice. The team was installed at 8.5 wins as an over/under, and sportsbook operator CG Technology has dropped it to 8 wins at their casinos following sizable bets on the under.
According to CG Technology, the 49ers received early action on the under from "respected" bettors. Their VP of race and sports said the book took six bets of $1,000 or more on the under from these types of bettors. They also said the average under bet on the 49ers was $200, while the average size of bets on other teams was closer to $30. These appear to be fairly small sample sizes, but it is interesting to consider for how the betting world views the 49ers. The 49ers and Indianapolis Colts are the only two teams whose win total CG Technology has changed. The Colts win total was bumped from 9.5 to 10 wins after 35 of the first 36 wagers were on the over.
The fact that bettors are fading the 49ers is not entirely surprising. The national perception of the team is not particularly great following an offseason of turnover. The surprising retirements, the free agency departures, and of course, Jim Harbaugh's "mutual" departure all leave most outside viewing the 49ers as a team doomed to crash. It is entirely possible they will crash and burn, but obviously a few of us are a little more hopeful. But I don't think we'll see any potential change in opinion until we see the team hit the field in September. Until then, national opinions are unlikely to change very much.
