The San Francisco 49ers head into the 2015 NFL Draft with a variety of needs, both short and long term. They begna to address wide receiver (Torrey Smith), defensive tackle (Darnell Dockett) and inside linebacker (Phillip Wheeler) in free agency, but even those positions remain areas of need as the team looks to the future.
Earlier this week, I put together a poll asking people to rank their top five draft needs. We had a ranked system that assigned points to each position, giving us a look at how people viewed the needs of the team. As of publication we had 666 voters (isn't that convenient!), and the results are listed below.
I'd be curious if people would lower inside linebacker in light of the Phillip Wheeler signing. It was only a one-year deal, so I am not assuming he is "the answer" long term, by any means. But, maybe the 49ers are OK with where they stand at this point. I do think this potentially lowers the need a little bit, but not a ton.
Defensive line ended up with more first place votes than inside linebacker, but it slipped behind due to more second through fifth place votes for the latter.
All in all, I'm not overly surprised by these results. The votes after the top five or six are a small enough sample size that you can sort of jumble them all together to some extent.
