49ers draft picks 2015: Team selects Arik Armstead after moving down

The San Francisoc 49ers have made their first pick of the 2015 NFL Draft following a move down two spots. The team selected Oregon defensive lineman Arik Armstead.

49ers fans are going to be questioning the Armstead pick given his raw nature. But the 49ers do need some depth at the defensive line, and they have a head coach who knows his defensive linemen. We'll see how quickly Armstead develops. Part of that will depend on whether or not Justin Smith decides to retire. If he does retire, there will be opportunities alongside Darnell Dockett, Tank Carradine, Quinton Dial, Glenn Dorsey, Tony Jerod-Eddie and so many more.

Nick Chiamardas put together a scouting report on Armstead earlier this year. The 49ers held an official visit with Armstead, and were frequently connected to him over the last three months. It is almost surprising the pick happened considering how obvious it seemed for the experts.

Our friends at Over The Cap have put together rookie pool estimates. For this pick, the 49ers will be giving Arik Armstead approximately a $4,711,272 signing bonus. The total value of the deal will be approximately $8,870,502, and the first year cap number would be approximately $1,612,818. We'll get confirmation on these numbers later this summer.
