Free agent Michael Crabtree is still out in free agency unsigned. He's visited the Dolphins and is reportedly meeting with our neighbors, the Oakland Raiders. For the start of free agency, the Crabtree news was very quiet. He was part of the second level of receivers after Torrey Smith and Jeremy Maclin. It would have been thought that he would have signed by now. That is not the case.
The problem for Michael Crabtree is the level of talent coming out of the draft. Last year, several rookie receivers had great seasons for minimal cost. This year's draft seems to have quite a few possible great receivers. Amari Cooper, DaVante Parker, Jaleen Strong, Kevin White, and Dorial Green-Beckham are all possible star players. And they could come cheaper than the money Crabtree is looking to get.
Michael Crabtree may have to gamble on himself this season. He may have to sign a low cost contract and prove himself to sign a more lucrative deal next offseason. His subpar season hurt his stock. He can still be a productive player, but with the great options coming out of the draft, teams are more inclined to try to grab those players.
