49ers pre-draft visits: Sammie Coates to visit team next week

The San Francisco 49ers have been researching a lot of wide receivers. We look at the latest planned visit.

The San Francisco 49ers are bringing another wide receiver to town for an official visit next week. Aaron Wilson is reporting the team will visit with Sammie Coates. The Auburn product will be the fifth wide receiver to take an official visit with the 49ers. The team has also met or will meet with DeVante Parker (link), Stefon Diggs (link), Ricky Collins (link) and Vince Mayle (link).

Coates caught 34 passes for 741 yards and four touchdowns last season. That was a decline from his sophomore year, when he finished with 42 receptions for 902 yards and seven touchdowns. He missed one game this past season with a bone bruise. He brings a ridiculous combination of height, weight and speed, but he is also a bit raw.

The 49ers signed Torrey Smith to a multi-year deal last month, but Anquan Boldin is nearing the end of his career, and we don't really know how the team feels about Bruce Ellington and Quinton Patton. Either one (or both) could break out in the near future, but adding another young wide receiver to the mix makes sense. They could try and make a play for a guy like DeVante Parker or Amari Cooper in the first round, or they could wait and see who slips into the second round (or beyond). There are a lot of intriguing options at the receiver position. It remains to be seen how this group will shake out compared to last year, but the 49ers have an opportunity to partake.
