We continue to wait for word on whether or not Justin Smith will retire or play in 2015, and it appears some (or all) of his San Francisco 49ers teammates are not sure of his plans yet. Eric Reid was on SiriusXM NFL radio Wednesday afternoon, and he had this to say:
Eric Reid on Justin Smith: Lots of guys are trying to convince him to come back, even his wife wants him to come back. #49ers
— SiriusXM NFL Radio (@SiriusXMNFL) April 8, 2015
I can't find the audio yet, but I'll keep an eye out for it to see if there is any more context. Some folks think Smith has told the 49ers and the team is just keeping it tucked away for now. At times that makes sense, but I am convinced Smith really has not told the team yet. In turn, I don't think he has made up his mind yet.
We are four months removed from the end of the season. Given how banged up he has been in recent years, it is possible it takes all this time to get back to truly 100 percent. If he was sufficiently banged up last season, maybe he wants to wait and see how long it takes to get back completely to 100 percent. I don't really know for sure what to make of the situation because for most potential retirements, we know pretty quickly. I still think we know before the draft so he can better prepare himself for Eric Mangini's defense (if he returns). But this carrying into the summer and leading up to training camp really would not stun me either.
