The San Francisco 49ers are back in action with the offseason workout program, and at some point we should hear from the coaches and maybe the players. Matt Barrows has one tidbit to get us started though: Vernon Davis is in attendance!
The 49ers tight end skipped last year's offseason workout program in a holdout he would not really described as a holdout. He ended up returning for training camp, but in hindsight, the holdout was the start of an abysmal year for Davis. He suffered an injury early, and while he later claimed that was not an issue later, it is hard to buy that. Of course, I could just be hoping it was that and not that he might just be hitting the end of career wall. I'm optimistic he can bounce back this season, but we'll see.
It is not a shock that Davis is in attendance. When the 49ers hired Jim Tomsula, Davis said that he would be in attendance on day one. While many fans were not inspired by the Tomsula promotion, we have heard positive comments from players. Tomsula is a guy players can get behind. Whether that helps when the team needs a kick in the butt during the dog days of the season remains to be seen. But for now, we at least know that Davis was not BS'ing us with his "I'll be there on day one" comments.
