The San Francisco 49ers are still considering linebacker Lance Briggs, according to reports from Matt Barrows and Matt Maiocco. The 49ers hosted Briggs back in late March, but things have been pretty quiet since. Briggs is an unrestricted free agent, and if he signs after tomorrow, May 12, he will not factor into the comp pick formula. If he just signed for the league minimum he would not count, but waiting until after tomorrow would allow teams to add a little bonus money into any deal.
The 49ers did not select an inside linebacker in the 2015 NFL Draft, but did sign Philip Wheeler the day of the first round. They head into the latter half of their offseason workout program with Wheeler joining NaVorro Bowman and Michael Wilhoite at the top of the depth chart. The position group also includes Desmond Bishop, Nick Moody, Shayne Skov and Nick Bellore.
My guess is we end up seeing Bowman and Wilhoite starting next to each other this fall. I don't see that Briggs much more to the table at this point in his career.
