The San Francisco 49ers will probably have a better handle on Justin Smith's future on Friday, according to general manager Trent Baalke. While on PFT Live, Baalke said that Justin Smith visited the facility on Wednesday, but Baalke had a prior scheduled event and was unable to meet with him. Baalke said he had spoken on the phone with Smith, and they would chat more potentially on Friday:
"Chatted on phone, Smith came in on Wednesday but I couldn't meet with him. We're gonna get a chance to talk, probably Friday, I'll have more of a feel for what's going on there."
Baalke will be around for the team's rookie minicamp, so we should get some answers soon. We've been saying that for a while now, but we should actually be getting close to an answer. Smith has been working out throughout the offseason, although he told Matt Barrows that would be happening even if he planned on retiring. For now, we wait because nothing has really indicated one thing or another. We can read into the length of the decision-making process, but this could go either way and I would not be surprised by either result.
