The San Francisco 49ers kick off their rookie minicamp on Saturday, and right now it sounds like former South Carolina quarterback Dylan Thompson will be the only quarterback on hand. Head coach Jim Tomsula said There was some thought to bringing in a second quarterback, but the team decided Thompson can handle all the reps. This is a repeat of last year when Kory Faulkner was the only quarterback at rookie camp. It is of course worth noting that tight end Blake Bell can play some quarterback, so he could be used in a pinch if need be.
The 49ers will almost certainly add a fourth quarterback at some point to join Thompson, Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert. Last year at this time, the 49ers had Kap, Gabbert, Faulkner and McLeod Bethel-Thompson on the roster, and signed Josh Johnson on May 14. They eventually cut down the depth, but they brought a pretty significant number of quarterbacks into training camp.
I don't expect five quarterbacks at training camp this year, in part because Jim Harbaugh was more of a QB connoisseur. He liked to have them around and bounced between backup QBs left and right. It seems unlikely that we see quite as much turnover in the depth chart, but they will look for another arm to take some of the third and fourth quarter preseason snaps.
