Golden Nuggets: 49ers continue to draft defense

Saturday, May 2, 2015 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of 49ers links from around the web.

Glenn Andrews-USA TODAY Sports

Good morning everyone. Yesterday, rounds two and three of the NFL draft took place and this morning rounds four through seven will take place. Unfortunately, my direct tv box did not want to cooperate yesterday so I missed most of the second round. Thankfully, I realized that I could watch the draft on my Xbox one in time to see the third round. The 49ers took a safety in the second round named Jaquiski Tartt who has to be on the short list for best name in the draft right? In the third round they nabbed edge rusher, Eli Harold of Virginia in a trend of all defense so far. This is the third year in a row the 49ers have taken a safety high, but at least they didn't use another first right? I'll admit it now, I have never seen Jaquiski play but his highlights show a safety with excellent burst. He has good size and good measurables and from everything I have read in the last few hours, good coverage instincts and tackling ability. I'm not going to say it was a pressing area of need, but I'm sure many people are worried about Eric Reid's concussions, and the front office might be in the club.

We can't get through these nuggets without talking about the worst draft pick in the history of any sport ever right? Arik Armstead was the 49ers first round pick and has been almost universally panned by 49er fans. It's crazy, at some point the amount of hate for this guy becomes a fad right? Let's face it, the NFL draft is a crap shoot. Sometimes the most NFL ready player becomes a bust and the biggest project makes the hall of fame. I am an unabashed Arik Armstead fan, and I'm not afraid to admit that I wanted him on the 49ers despite everything.  I grew up near to him and we went to rival high schools, but I won't celebrate the pick because I know he has flaws and I am undeniably too close to the situation to give an unbiased opinion. From what I have seen from his Oregon tape, he has issues staying low and getting off the ball quickly. But when he is on, there are flashes of brilliance. Guys have been drafted in the first round for worse reasons than they are huge and could be brilliant with coaching. To the links!
