49ers draft picks 2016: San Francisco has 9, could end up with 12 in 2016 NFL Draft

The San Francisco 49ers could be in store for a sizable haul of 2016 draft picks. Here is where they stand with the 2015 NFL Draft officially a wrap.

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

The 2015 NFL Draft is barely in the rear view mirror, but it makes sense to take a look at where the team stands heading into 2016. We'll actually have a mock draft from SB Nation tomorrow, but in the meantime, here is a look at the 49ers draft picks for next year.

The team has its own seven picks, but they also have two picks acquired in trades this year. The team moved down in the first round, swapping picks with the San Diego Chargers. The move netted them a fourth round pick this year, and then a fifth round pick in 2016. Later in the draft, the team moved down in the fifth round, swapping picks with the Dallas Cowboys. The 49ers netted a 2016 seventh round pick for that move. David Neumann will have more analysis of those two trades in the next day or so.

The 49ers could end up with three compensatory picks, depending on how the free agency calculations shake out. If you look at our offseason roster tracker, the qualifying free agents include the following:

Additions: WR Torrey Smith, LB Nick Bellore, OL Erik Pears, CB Shareece Wright
Losses: OG Mike Iupati, CB Chris Culliver, CB Perrish Cox, OLB Dan Skuta, RB Frank Gore, WR Michael Crabtree, QB Josh Johnson

Based on Over The Cap's cancellation chart, Culliver, Cox and Skuta should net out the 49ers picks in the fourth, fifth and sixth round, respectively. Those are not finalized until next March, but they are decent approximations for now. If they all pan out, the 49ers could be looking at upwards of 12 draft picks next year. The 49ers could not trade those three comp picks, but you know they would be active with the remaining nine.
