Former 49ers first round pick A.J. Jenkins signs with Dallas Cowboys

The San Francisco 49ers will face off this preseason against a busted former No. 1 pick. A.J. Jenkins is headed to Dallas.

Well, 49ers fans, you'll get another look at A.J. Jenkins this preseason. The Dallas Cowboys announced on Tuesday that they have signed wide receiver A.J. Jenkins following a tryout last week. Jenkins was waived by the Kansas City Chiefs in February, and had been bouncing around tryouts since. He worked out with the Jets earlier this month, and then followed it up with a workout in Dallas.

The contract is likely for no more than the league minimum, as this is essentially a flier on the former first round pick. Jenkins never got anything going in San Francisco, and was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013. The Chiefs never got much out of him before his release. Now, he joins a Dallas squad that could use some depth at the position. Dez Bryant and Terrance Williams are a great 1-2, but the Cowboys don't have much behind that.

According to our Cowboys blog, Bryant is not attending OTAs. He is not expected to hold out into training camp, but they could use some extra bodies. And who nows, maybe they can get something out of Jenkins for the coming season. I wouldn't hold my breath, but maybe year four is when he figures something out.

The 49ers host the Cowboys in Week 2 of the preseason. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. PT on Sunday, August 23. I'd imagine Jenkins will see a lot of playing time if he is still on the roster at that point.
