The San Francisco 49ers made a pair of transactions official on Monday, placing Chris Borland on the Reserve/Retired list, and using the waived/injured designation on Chase Thomas. The moves cut the team's roster down to 80 players. That includes 70 veterans and ten draft picks.
The team has eight reported undrafted free agent signings, but those are not official, so they are not part of the roster. I have listed the current roster in a table below, with the UDFAs listed below the table.
When the 49ers announced their UDFA signings, it is very possible they release more players. They currently have eight tight ends on the roster. They could keep all eight heading into training camp, but odds seem pretty slim that's the case. They would have several getting little to no playing time, and there are other areas that could use a little more camp depth.
Assuming the reported UDFA signings happen, my guess is they still add one more quarterback, if not two. They need third and fourth quarter quarterbacks for the preseason. There is also the chance they still add another inside linebacker. I could see Wheeler being the one addition, but maybe they add Lance Briggs after the comp pick date passes next week (at which point any above minimum deal would not cost a comp pick). I doubt they add a camp leg because Bradley Pinion could very well handle some of that work as a punter and kicker. One more offensive tackle might make sense as well.
Here is the full roster.
