The San Francisco 49ers have made a roster move following the close of minicamp. The team announced on Friday they successfully claimed offensive tackle Sean Hooey off waivers from the New York Jets. The move increases the 49ers roster total to 89 players following Anthony Davis's retirement and the trade of Andy Lee.
Hooey (6'9, 304) originally signed with the St. Louis Rams as an undrafted free agent out of Cincinnati following the 2013 NFL Draft. He spent the entire season on the Rams practice squad. He signed a reserve/future contract immediately after the season, and was part of the Rams final roster cuts in August. He returned to the Rams practice squad, but was released four days later. He signed with the New York Jets following the 2014 season, but was waived on June 11.
Hooey's a big guy with serious arm length according to scouting reports. I am not finding a specific number on the arms, but the limited scouting reports I have found mention that as a strength. The most thorough report I found comes from this Rams blog following his addition to the roster in 2013. It sounds like size and length are positives, while technique is a negative. He seems to have a lot of solid raw tools, but needs to work on honing them.
