Nick Saban on early 49ers standout DeAndrew White

New, comments

The San Francisco 49ers landed five wide receivers as undrafted free agents, and thus far DeAndrew White has reportedly been the most impressive. We look back at some comments from Nick Saban about White.

One of the stories of minicamp was the strong performance of undrafted rookie DeAndrew White. The Alabama product showed some things in a variety of roles. He faces an uphill climb for a roster spot, but he has used the offseason workout program to build momentum heading into training camp.

I was poking around Twitter earlier today, and I came across an interesting article from back in March. Alabama held their Pro Day, and head coach Nick Saban had a chance to discuss the many prospects eligible for the NFL Draft. On White, he had the following to say:

"I think DeAndrew White is probably a guy that I would, if you said, 'Who would be most underappreciated by the NFL?' because he has a lot more ability than what his production maybe has been here, whether it's because of injuries or whatever that he's battled through. He's got great speed. He's got great size. He's a great special teams player. He's been a great special teams player for us.

"If you're not a No. 1 or 2 receiver on a team, you're going to have to play special teams. I think he's going to be a real value for somebody, who's going to get a guy who has great ability but probably could develop into something special."

Injuries were White's biggest issue at Alabama. He tore his ACL five games into the 2012 season, and since then has dealt with a fractured toe, separated shoulder and hamstring injury. He is viewed as a solid talent, but clearly teams were afraid of the injuries. The talent has flashed for the San Francisco 49ers in shorts. Based on what I have read and heard, I would not be surprised to see White look solid in training camp. The next step will be avoiding injuries moving forward. If he can stay healthy, the 49ers might have themselves quite a steal.
