QB coach Steve Logan mentioned to reporters that he is focusing on explosive plays in the offense. Last season, the 49ers had only 5 pass plays of 40+ yards, which ranked as one of the worst in the NFL. The Niners haven't been known as an explosive offensive unit the last few season except when Kap had one of his trademark runs or when VD was running routes down the field.
The Niners are trying to correct that part of their game with the addition of the home run threat in Torrey Smith. The Niners are hoping that Smith can help the Niners stretch the field in the same way that he helped the Ravens. That could also open the field for Vernon Davis to expose. The team also hopes that some of the undrafted WRs that they signed can add to the team. WR DeAndre White has shown great speed and hands during minicamp. The addition of Reggie Bush gives the team a player that catch and run out of the backfield.
The reshuffling of the offensive line will determine how much the explosive plays will grow. If Kap has time to throw downfield, the explosive plays could come. But if he isn't given time, the long pass plays will not come for the team.
