76 days to 49ers kickoff: Who wore it best? Nobody wears it now....

New, comments

The San Francisco 49ers season starts in 76 days. We take a look at jersey No. 76. Things changed pretty quickly for No. 76.

The San Francisco 49ers kick off the 2015 NFL regular season on Monday Night Football, on September 14. That game is now a mere 76 days away from kicking off their 2015 regular season. In the spirit of that approaching date, I thought I would steal this idea from our Oakland Raiders site.

Who wore it best: OT Len Rohde (1960-1974)

The man in the picture above is not in fact Len Rohde. I could not find a picture of Len Rohde, but could find pictures of stout defensive lineman Dwaine Board. Rohde started at left tackle almost exclusively from 1963 to 1974. As always, it is hard to assess specifically. I'd love to hear from some of our older readers who might remember a little bit about Rohde. I did find one good article from 2014, with comments from Rohde when Deacon Jones passed away.

Board is a worthy second on this list. He played for the 49ers from 1979 to 1988, peaking from 1983 to 1986. In that four-year span, Board had 42.5 sacks. He was a key part of a 49ers defense sometimes overshadowed by the high profile offense.

Who wears it now: NOOOOO-BODY

We'll see how long I run the Nobody as a joke. But seriously, Anthony Davis's retirement has left the 49ers with a big question at right tackle. I would not be surprised if one of the rookies ended up grabbing 76, but for now, it is vacant. At the right tackle position, Erik Pears is holding down the fort heading into training camp. We'll see whether or not Alex Boone moves over there, or what kind of opportunity Trenton Brown gets. That first week of training camp as we are learning more about the depth chart will be interesting, to say the least.
