The San Francisco 49ers kick off the 2015 NFL regular season on Monday Night Football, on September 14. That game. means San Francisco is now a mere 54 days away from kicking off its 2015 regular season. In the spirit of that approaching date, I thought I would steal this idea from our Oakland Raiders site.
Who wore it best: LB Lee Woodall (1994-1999)
The San Francisco 49ers spent a sixth round pick on Woodall in 1994, and the pick paid immediate dividends. Woodall worked his way into the starting lineup his rookie season, and was a contributor on the 49ers Super Bowl champion squad. He started at left outside linebacker alongside Gary Plummer and Ken Norton. Woodall would go on to earn two Pro Bowl spots, in 1995 and 1997. Woodall was never a splashy player, but he was a very solid contributor.
Who wears it now: LB Nick Moody (2013-present)
The 49ers spent another sixth round pick on No. 54 when they selected Nick Moody in the 2013 NFL Draft. Moody has been a notable special teams player through the first two years of his career. This year he has a chance to earn some defensive playing time following the retirements of Patrick Willis and Chris Borland.
Michael Wilhoite is the favorite to start alongside NaVorro Bowman, and the team brought in Philip Wheeler as a potential reserve, so it is still a tough competition for Moody. Jim Tomsula gave Moody a vote of confidence this past May, and it will be interesting to see how the depth chart shakes out in the first few days of practice. My guess is Moody is third on the depth chart, but we'll see what August 1 brings.
