49ers vs. Texans, Preseason Week 1: The Jim Tomsula era begins!

The 49ers open their preseason against the Houston Texans. We take a look at pertinent details related to the game, as well as provide an open thread for discussion.

It's football time! Preseason wins and losses do not count, but I don't think you'll find a single 49ers fan that believes today's game doesn't matter. This game marks the start of the Jim Tomsula era in Santa Clara. Or, I suppose the re-birth given his one game as interim head coach back in 2010. I don't really know, but either way, Jim Tomsula is in charge.

It has been a long, tumultuous offseason for the 49ers, with roster and coaching turnover the likes of which few teams ever witness. Retirements, releases, free agency departures and trades have resulted in the most roster turnover the 49ers have had since the roster purging dark days. Let's hope this is not the start of another dark era!

We have been tracking practice reports since the start of training camp two weeks ago. There is a lot to be gained from those, but seeing players actually doing things in game action is great for fans. We can see where players are situated on the depth chart, and who can step up in real game action, as opposed to less contact in practice.

The position battles will be impacted today, but things can change on a dime. A strong performance today can be cut down to size by a poor performance next week. In the same fashion, a poor performance today can be quickly forgotten with a big performance next week. We'll see what the game brings.

We'll have plenty to break down after the game, but for now, here's your first game thread. Along with it is a rundown of pertinent information related to the game.
