28 days until 49ers kickoff: Who wore it best? Who wears it now?

The San Francisco 49ers season starts in 28 days. We take a look at jersey No. 28, worn by very few solid players, but hopefully settled for the foreseeable future.

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers kick off the 2015 NFL regular season on Monday Night Football, on September 14. That game. means San Francisco is now a mere 28 days away from kicking off its 2015 regular season. In the spirit of that approaching date, I thought I would steal this idea from our Oakland Raiders site.

Who wore it best: DB Dana Hall (1992-1994)

It says something about the number 28 that Hall is the guy who wore it best. The 49ers spent a first round pick on Hall, did not get a whole lot of much out of him. He had two interceptions in 15 starts his first season, no interceptions in an injury plagued second season, and two interceptions in his third season. It appears he was released after the 1994 season, but I can't tell entirely. The team did not protect him in the 1995 expansion draft, so my guess is that when the Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars passed on him, the 49ers released him.

A first round bust is never good, but here are your choices:

No. 28 jerseys

Who wears it now: RB Carlos Hyde (2014-present)

The current situation could make Carlos Hyde the "best to wear" No. 28 in very short order. He enters his second season with the 49ers taking over the starting role held for so long by Frank Gore. Hyde will be complemented by Reggie Bush and potentially guys like Kendall Hunter and Jarryd Hayne, but I think we see Hyde getting the lion's share of the workload. In reality, a solid 2015 campaign would probably be enough to vault him ahead of the rest of these players. Fingers crossed that is the case!
