The first preseason game is in the books and the Jim Tomsula era gets started with a loss. Preseason wins/losses do not mean much in regards to predicting regular season records, which is why the team's gameplan was very vanilla. The 1st game had some positives and negatives for the team. The 1st team offense was not in the game long and some of the players we know will be starters did not play in this game.

The biggest positive was the defensive line performance based on short yardage. The one goal line sequence proved that the defensive line is still the strongest position on the team. They completely manhandled the Texans' offensive line in that series and it was great to see. Mike Purcell in particular played very well. The team may have to make room on the roster for the practice squad player if he continues that kind of performance.

Jarryd Hayne and Blaine Gabbert showed very well for themselves as well. Hayne broke off a 53-yard run. He showed nice movement in making the 1st person miss and great ability in the return game, which was an area most thought would translate from rugby. Blaine Gabbert showed major improvement from last season. He went 8-11 for 86 yards and the lone touchdown for the Niners. While he will not be taking Colin's spot, it's good that he showed that he may be a serviceable backup.

Game 2 is this Sunday at Levi's Stadium against the Dallas Cowboys. The 1st teamers are expected to play a bigger role in this game.
