The San Francisco 49ers kick off the 2015 NFL regular season on Monday Night Football, on September 14. That game. means San Francisco is now a mere 43 days away from kicking off its 2015 regular season. In the spirit of that approaching date, I thought I would steal this idea from our Oakland Raiders site.
Who wore it best: S Dave Waymer (1990-1991)
The number 43 has not been worn by big names, but there have been a few players with some decent success. Defensive back Windlan Hall had the longest stretch of success as a 49er, but I like Dave Waymer for this one. He was only with the 49ers for two seasons, but he had seven interceptions his first year, and four his second year. Unfortunately, Waymer passed away in 1993 due to a heart attack reportedly induced by cocaine use.
The picture above is not Waymer, but rather former 49ers cornerback Antonio Langham. The 49ers signed him to a 5-year, $17 million contract back in 1998, and he lasted one season before returning to the Cleveland Browns in an expansion draft deal.
Who wears it now: S Craig Dahl (2013-present)
I was tempted to use a Dahl picture on the front page, but decided to go with Langham. Dahl is back for a third year, competing for the primary backup safety role, and a lead role on special teams. Fans get pissy about Dahl, but he remains a solid special teams option. He is in the final year of his contract, and if the 49ers elect to cut him, they will save $650,000 in cap space. It is certainly a useful amount of money, but his roster chances will depend in part on how guys like L.J. McCray and Jaquiski Tartt perform over the next month.
