We're back for another week of San Francisco 49ers preseason football. A week after dropping a 23-10 loss to the Houston Texans, the 49ers open their home preseason schedule against the Dallas Cowboys. The game kicks off at 5 p.m. PT, and will air on CBS-5 in the Bay Area. An live online stream is available via NFL GamePass, including a 7-day free trial.
This game marks the 15th time these historic rivals have squared off in the preseason. The two teams last faced off in the preseason in 2009. The 49ers won that game 20-13. Just to take you in the way-back machine, the 49ers leading passer was Nate Davis, who completed 10 of 15 passes for 132 yards. Kory Sheets led the ground game with 42 yards on 11 carries, and Glen Coffee rushed eight times for 34 yards. The leading receivers were Arnaz Battle (4 rec, 54 yards) and Micheal Spurlock (2 rec, 50 yards). On defense, Mark Roman led the team with five tackles and an interception. Good times!
Must Reads
The 49ers will be without Daniel Kilgore, Bruce Ellington, Philip Wheeler and Michael Wilhoite, all dealing with muscle strains. Dres Anderson, Kendall Hunter, Aaron Lynch, Jimmie Ward and Nick Bellore all returned to practice this week, but there is no word on their playing statuses. NaVorro Bowman, Reggie Bush, Vernon Davis and Darnell Dockett were among the players who were given a veteran's day off for the first preseason game. There is no word yet if they will play.
We also do not know how much time we can expect from the starters. Colin Kaepernick and some of his fellow offensive starters only got one series last week. They will go longer, but my guess is it ends up being maybe three series, depending on their length. The defensive starters went a little longer last week, and I imagine we see a little time added for guys like Quinton Dial and Glenn Dorsey.
And finally, the grass. This marks the first football at Levi's Stadium since the team had to cancel some practices there earlier this month. The turf has been replaced since Taylor Swift's concerts last week. The Cowboys have said they will conduct a walk-through to see how the field is, at which point they will decide on how much they will play some of their starters. We'll keep an eye out for more on that. In the meantime, on to the nuts and bolts of Sunday's game!
