The San Francisco 49ers announced four players will sit out for Sunday's preseason contest against the Dallas Cowboys. The list included defensive lineman Glenn Dorsey, wide receiver Bruce Ellington, defensive back Jimmie Ward and linebacker Philip Wheeler. Dorsey played last week, but dealt with a muscle strain earlier this week. Ward returned to team drills this past week, but clearly the team is working him back slowly. Ellington and Wheeler missed last week's game, and remain sidelined with muscle strains.
The list did not include NaVorro Bowman, Reggie Bush, Vernon Davis, Aaron Lynch or Darnell Dockett. Their respective statuses remain TBD at this point. One reason it might make sense to get Bowman out there today is making his debut in front of the home crowd. I suppose they could also just save that for Week 1 in prime time.
I would still be a bit surprised if Bush played, but beyond that, who knows what we'll see. I'm perfectly fine with the 49ers taking their time on getting these guys on the field this preseason. I see some value in getting some snaps before the regular season, but it could very well just be prudent to wait until the games count. We'll see what Jim Tomsula has to say about this after the game.
