The San Francisco 49ers have officially removed linebacker Michael Wilhoite from the Active/NFI list. He opened training camp on the list due to a muscle strain, but appears ready to get back to work.
On Monday, Jim Tomsula had said Wilhoite would be activated this week. He also made sure to clarify that Wilhoite would not be immediately returning to full drills. Tomsula said it would be in similar fashion to the other returning injured players, that he would be slowly worked in based on how the coaching staff and trainers thought was best. My guess is this means we see him primarily doing individual work this week. I would be surprised if he played this Saturday against the Broncos, but we'll see what the week brings.
In Wilhoite's absence, Nick Moody has gotten starting reps next to NaVorro Bowman. Shayne Skov has also gotten a lot of reps with Wilhoite and Philip Wheeler's absences. It is hard to tell where Wilhoite is in the depth chart, or will be once he is back for team drills. My guess is he is behind Moody and ahead of Skov, but I really don't know. Moody is a big tackler, but is still working to develop a lot of the important nuances of the ILB position. It will be an interesting competition with camp winding down.
