The San Francisco 49ers kick off the 2015 NFL regular season on Monday Night Football, on September 14. That game. means San Francisco is now a mere 15 days away from kicking off its 2015 regular season. In the spirit of that approaching date, I thought I would steal this idea from our Oakland Raiders site.
Who wore it best: WR Michael Crabtree (2009-2014)
It was a tale of what could have been with the guy who wore this one best. It is not even close that Crabtree is tops here. I think most 49ers fans were really excited when the Oakland Raiders selected Darrius Heyward-Bey and then Crabtree slipped to the 49ers. He appeared to be the best receiver in that year's draft, and the 49ers were in desperate need of a receiver.
There are plenty who held Crabtree's holdout against him through the length of his 49ers career. People kept saying he really just wanted to play in Dallas, and he had no interest in playing for the 49ers. HIs career in San Francisco was rocky at times, with injuries creating numerous problems. It seemed like he might finally have a dominant receiver alongside him in 2013 with the arrival of Anquan Boldin, and then Crabtree tore his Achilles.
Crabtree did unbelievable work battling back from the injury, and deserves a ton of credit for making it back at the end of the 2013 season. But, his footwork took a hit with the injury. He acknowledged not being back at 100 percent until the following year, and by that time, the 49ers had too many of the same kind of receiver.
Crabtree signed a one-year deal with the Oakland Raiders this offseason, finishing his 49ers career with 347 receptions, 4,327 receiving yards and 26 touchdowns.
Who wears it now: Nobody WR DeAndre Smelter (2015-present)
I completely forgot about DeAndre Smelter. I normally go 49ers.com's roster page, and then sort by jersey number. Smelter is listed further down on the injury list so he does not show up in the main part of the roster page I see. Whoops.
