Fooch's update: 49ers announce the release
The San Francisco 49ers are going to release cornerback Chris Cook, according to a report by NFL reporter Aaron Wilson. The move would clear a roster spot for the team, but Wilson did not suggest any corresponding roster move. It is entirely possible the team adds another offensive lineman, but who knows at this point.
Cook is part of a cornerback depth chart that features a lot of young talent, but a lot questions. Tramaine Brock, Shareece Wright and Dontae Johnson have been working in the starting lineup, and Chris Cook has mostly been in the background. In fact, I have not seen a single mention of Cook in training camp reports.
Cook was solid last year before ending up on injured reserve, and is currently on a one-year deal. Given his veteran status, the team might have decided they were prepared to go younger at the position, and wanted to give him more time to compete for a job elsewhere. The 49ers have media availability later this afternoon at 1 p.m. PT, so if Eric Mangini is the coach up on the podium, maybe we'll hear something.
