Golden Nuggets: Commanding the huddle

Thursday, August 6th, 2015 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of San Francisco 49ers links from the Internet

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Good morning, Faithful. The 49ers wrapped up another day of practice today that included everything from poor field conditions, to shortages within position groups. However, probably the biggest news of the day came during early press conferences where Colin Kaepernick revealed that he is finally now calling plays in the huddle this training camp. Kaepernick then went on to say that this was something that Jim Harbaugh did over the past few years, and that now the play calling will go from Chryst, to Logan, to Kaepernick, similar to how it would work in game situations.

This revelation was interesting considering the trouble the 49ers have had with the play clock over the past few seasons. I can't count how many times I have heard the phrase " You play like you practice", so it is interesting that the team would execute play calls in this fashion during practices, when they can't do that during games. Hopefully, this change leads to more efficient play calling during the season.

These comments from Kaepernick might also further explain the comments Gore made yesterday about how Andrew Luck controls the huddle like no QB he has ever played with.  I would imagine that it would be hard to gain the confidence of your teammates when the coaches don't even give you the power to make the calls. It should be interesting to see how this change affects the offense this season.
