38 days until 49ers kickoff: Who wore it best? Who wears it now?

The San Francisco 49ers season starts in 38 days. We take a look at jersey No. 38.

The San Francisco 49ers kick off the 2015 NFL regular season on Monday Night Football, on September 14. That game. means San Francisco is now a mere 38 days away from kicking off its 2015 regular season. In the spirit of that approaching date, I thought I would steal this idea from our Oakland Raiders site.

Who wore it best: FS Dashon Goldson (2007-2012)

It was not a pretty day for the 49ers, but our countdown to the start of the regular season continues! I was looking through the franchise history at No. 38, and it is not particularly significant. The biggest name is in fact The Hawk. Dashon Goldson was voted onto two Pro Bowl teams, and earned a selection on the All-Pro squad his final season in San Francisco. He benefited tremendously from arrival of Vic Fangio and Ed Donatell, and was able to turn it into a sizable contract in free agency.

Who wears it now: RB Jarryd Hayne, S Jermaine Whitehead (2015-present)

The 49ers are splitting up No. 38 for now. The team can have one offensive and one defensive player wear the same number during training camp. At the end of camp, if both players make the team, they then decide on new numbers. Of course, the two guys mentioned here are kind of long shots at this point. Hayne has some guaranteed money that would seem to indicate he is guaranteed at least a practice squad spot, but both are fighting an uphill battle for the 53-man roster.
