13 days until 49ers kickoff: Who wore it best? Who wears it now?

The San Francisco 49ers season starts in 13 days. We take a look at jersey No. 13, worn by some notable names in franchise QB history.

The San Francisco 49ers kick off the 2015 NFL regular season on Monday Night Football, on September 14. That game. means San Francisco is now a mere 13 days away from kicking off its 2015 regular season. In the spirit of that approaching date, I thought I would steal this idea from our Oakland Raiders site.

Who wore it best: P Tom Wittum (1973-1977)

I have to admit, No. 13 is an odd one in the history of the San Francisco 49ers. I decided to go with a punter from the 70s because it is kind of a mish-mash of players. Frankie Albert wore the number for his final year in professional football, but it appears he did not wear it prior to that.

The history of No. 13 includes Steve Bono, Tim Rattay and Shaun Hill. That's kind of an amazing mix of notable names in 49ers history. Bono was part of the 49ers ridiculous quarterback depth in the early 90s. Tim Rattay was the quarterback when the team took a deep dive into the crappiness of the early to mid 2000s. And of course, Shaun Hill was a cult favorite with 49ers fans. But, Wittum actually retired as No. 2 on the team's career punting yards list. So, there's that.

Who wears it now: QB Dylan Thompson (2015-present)

The 49ers signed Thompson this past May as an undrafted free agent. He has not had the best of performances this preseason, but maybe we see him end up on the practice squad. Or maybe the 49ers cut ties and look for another young quarterback next year. I have hoped to see the team draft a QB to work in as a developmental talent behind Colin Kaepernick, but we continue to wait.
