The San Francisco 49ers kick off the 2015 NFL regular season on Monday Night Football, on September 14. That game. means San Francisco is now a mere 2 days away from kicking off its 2015 regular season. In the spirit of that approaching date, I thought I would steal this idea from our Oakland Raiders site.
Who wore it best: K Todd Peterson (2003-2004)
We are finishing this thing off pretty poorly. I suppose that was going to be the case for the low single digits, but man is it ugly. The top two options are Peterson and David Akers. The 49ers got some strong work from Akers, but he got the yips in 2012, and was almost benched for the playoffs. The team brought in some kickers to work out, but he finished strong, connecting on 4 of 5 field goals in the playoffs. It turns out he had a sports hernia injury that likely impacted his kicking.
Todd Peterson gets the edge based on a slightly higher Career AV, and not much else. He played during arguably the most forgettable two-year stretch of the last 35 years. But he was pretty solid during that stretch, so that counts for something.
Who wears it now: QB Blaine Gabbert (2014-present)
The 49ers have given No. 2 to a pair of backup quarterbacks since parting ways with David Akers. Colt McCoy wore it in 2013, and Blaine Gabbert is wearing it heading into his second season with the team. The highlight of this preseason has to be the belief that the 49ers should consider Gabbert a viable option to replace Colin Kaepernick as starter if Kap struggles. Gabbert is a serviceable backup, with his highest possible ceiling maybe something close to Alex Smith 2011. But even that is with a lot of things going right for him.
