The San Francisco 49ers will be without running back Reggie Bush this weekend when they face the Pittsburgh Steelers. Head coach Jim Tomsula announced Bush will not travel with the team, instead staying in Santa Clara to receive treatment on his calf.
This is not a surprising development. Over the last month and a half dating to the start of training camp, Tomsula and the 49ers have played it safe when a player is dealing with an injury. The team will instead look to Jarryd Hayne and Mike Davis as backup running backs to Carlos Hyde. I expect another sizable workload for Hyde, but it will be interesting to see how much work Hayne and Davis split behind Hyde.
The other news from Tomsula was that wide receiver Bruce Ellington is dealing with an ankle issue. Tomsula said it came up when he arrived today, and they will know more after practice. He did not seem to think it was serious, but again, we don't really know quite yet. Ellington got a punt return in place of Jarryd Hayne, but was fairly limited in his work. He played three offensive snaps and four special teams snaps. The team played a lot of heavier packages, so this is not particularly surprising. This weekend against the Steelers opens up some other options, so we'll see if he's healthy enough to take advantage.
