The high from last Monday night's victory was short-lived in Pittsburgh. The Steelers, coming off 9 days rest since their loss on the opening Thursday night, completely dominated the game. The 49ers defense was torched by one of the best QB-WR combos in the league with Antonio Brown hauling in 9 catches for 195 yards and 1 touchdown. On the day, Roethlisberger was 21-27 for 369 yards and 3 touchdowns.
There were few positives from the 49ers perspective. Colin Kaepernick played well considering the circumstances. He was consistently under pressure and still managed to go 33 of 46 passing with 335 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also ran 9 times for 51 yards. He was not helped by his receivers who dropped a few passes. Torrey Smith and Kap seemed to find a connection on Sunday with Kap finding Smith 6 times for 120 yards and a score.
The negatives of the performance were very apparent. The Niners secondary was picked apart by Big Ben and his wideouts. They gave up big play after big play and most were on 3rd downs. They were not helped by the front 7. Ben had all day to throw. They did not record a single QB hit and with a QB like Big Ben that cannot happen. He is one of the best QBs in the game and he dismantled the Niners. The Niners offensive line showed the same problems that were very apparent in the preseason. Kap was sacked 5 times and was harassed all day. They'll have to rebound with their 1st division game next week against 1st place Arizona in the desert.
As an aside, I'd like to note that going forward the links for the Nuggets will no longer open in a new tab. Turns out, most people don't like that so if you're used to that, and you want to open in a new tab or window, right click on the link or use whatever shortcut works for your operating system. That's been your boring site update for the day. (Note, there is a strong chance that muscle memory will mean I forget this on some links -- the big thing here is that we're phasing that out going forward). Onto your links!
