NFL power rankings, Week 3: 49ers back down, re-assessing good, bad teams

Week 2 of the 2015 NFL season is a wrap. We need to start re-considering good and bad teams. We present Week 3 NFL power rankings!

The second week of the 2015 NFL season wrapped up with the New York Jets going into Indianapolis and beating the Colts 17-7. The win improves the Jets to 2-0, with the second best point differential in the league. The Colts dropped to 0-2, and have the second worst point differential in the league. Meanwhile, the 49ers dropped an ugly one to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and are now 1-1 and rank No. 21 in point differential.

Perspectives will change plenty in the first month of the season, but through two weeks, do you feel comfortable about declaring any previously bad teams good, or any previously good teams bad? Are the 2-0 Jets a "good team" this year? Are the 0-2 Eagles a "bad team" this year? We can't say either with certainty, but we are getting hints. That Jets defense is looking really sharp, and that bodes well for them being a playoff contender. I shot them up the rankings primarily because of that defense The Eagles are bit tougher to figure out. Their run game is struggling to do much of anything, but they have also faced a pair of 2-0 teams. I don't think Sam Bradford and that offensive line are going to do much for them, and I think we see them lose more games than they win.

Speaking of the 2-0 Cowboys, they are officially a tough team to rank for now. The loss of Tony Romo to a clavicle injury is likely going to hurt them over the next two months. I could see that offensive line and defense keeping them competitive, but they can't rely on Brandon Weeden to win them many games. I ended up dropping them a spot this week, in spite of the win. I just don't know what to make of a Brandon Weeden-led Cowboys team.

As for the 49ers? I dropped them to No. 17 in part because they are officially a tough team to figure out. I think we see games where they look like the team that beat Minnesota handily. I also think we see games closer to what we saw against Pittsburgh. They are not one team or the other, but I imagine we see a fairly inconsistent team that bounces back and forth between looking good and bad.

I dropped them behind the Indianapolis Colts for now, but even the Colts are hard to figure out. Their defense is not good, but is this team winless bad? For now they sit right at No. 16, because I just don't know.
