Throwback Thursday, part 2: Terrell Owens and the Dallas Cowboys star

We already had one Throwback Thursday video, but today in particular requires another one. We had elpato's look back at the San Francisco 49ers dominating win over the Arizona Cardinals. But today is a notable day in 49ers history. 15 years ago today, Terrell Owens had his moment on the star.

After scoring a touchdown, TO quickly turned and ran toward midfield. He put the ball down and raised his arms right on the Cowboys midfield star. TO was always one to celebrate in a big way, but that caught folks slightly off-guard.

The Cowboys got a modest bit of vengeance later. Emmitt Smith ran in a touchdown, and then proceeded to run to midfield, go down to one knee and emphatically slam the ball against the star.

Later in the game, TO decided to go for a second run at the star. Cowboys safety George Teague would have none of that. He followed TO and popped Owens as he tried to put the ball down on the star. On the first TO run, and Smith's counter, it appears no penalty flags were thrown. On this last time, TO was flagged for taunting and Teague was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. The penalties offset, and the 49ers went on to win 41-24.

Steve Mariucci suspended Owens for one game due to his actions against the Cowboys. I don't know if this was the first issue between TO and the coaches, but this certainly contributed to the strained relationship that eventually resulted in TO's departure. Fun times!
