Dylan Thompson gets start for 49ers vs. Chargers, throws 70-yard TD on first attempt

Well, that was certainly something. The San Francisco 49ers have turned the preseason finale keys over to quarterback Dylan Thompson, and he struck early. The 49ers third string quarterback got the start over Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert, and after one series he is 1/1 for 70 yards, a touchdown and a 2-point conversion completed!

After a pair of runs, the 49ers ran a quick little slant pattern to Bruce Ellington. Thompson found him over the middle, and the 49ers second-year receiver turned on the jets. He made up the 70 yards in no time at all, and the 49ers were on the board. The team went for the two-point conversion, and Thompson found Quinton Patton, who made a nice one-handed catch.

The 49ers are benching most of their starters for this game. The 49ers offensive lineup included the following, and just about sums up preseason football. But hey, congrats to Thompson and Ellington on the beautiful connection:

QB: Dylan Thompson
RB: Kendall Hunter
WR: Quinton Patton, Jerome Simpson, Bruce Ellington as slot receiver
TE: Xavier Grimble
OL: Patrick Miller, Andrew Tiller, Joe Looney, Brandon Thomas, Trenton Brown
