The San Francisco 49ers kick off the 2015 NFL regular season on Monday Night Football, on September 14. That game. means San Francisco is now a mere 10 days away from kicking off its 2015 regular season. In the spirit of that approaching date, I thought I would steal this idea from our Oakland Raiders site.
Who wore it best: P Klaus Wilmsmeyer (1992-1994)
This is not a pretty one. The top two by Career AV are a backup quarterback and Kyle Williams. I was tempted by Williams, but given what happened in the NFC Championship Game, I think people here might riot. And so, I'm going with the punter on the 1994-95 Super Bowl squad. He departed in free agency after the season, but he got a ring, so he gets the nod. Big congrats to Klaus!
Who wears it now: WR Bruce Ellington (2014-present)
It will not take a lot for someone to take over the top spot on this number, and Ellington has the talent to do it. He has dealt with leg injuries early in his NFL career, so really it comes down to if he can stay healthy. The preseason finale showed a guy who can do some crazy things with the ball in his hand. We'll see him get work in the slot this year, and then it will be interesting to see if he gets return work as well. The 49ers potentially have Jarryd Hayne and/or DeAndrew White who could fit in that role as well.
