Jarryd Hayne made it official on Twitter! He made the 49ers 53-man roster, It seemed unlikely he would be cut, but when it comes to rookies, you never know what surprises might catch us off-guard.

It is not a surprise Hayne made the 49ers roster if you watched him this preseason. The rookie put on a show, excelling in numerous phases of the game. He was a dynamic punt returner, showing great hands and vision. He had several big runs, and then complemented those with a great run in between the tackles against the Chargers. He added in a big hit on cornerback Lowell Rose to cap off a strong preseason.

His role is not 100 percent clear as the regular season approaches. He showed a lot as a return man, but the 49ers also got great work from Bruce Ellington and DeAndrew White. This is the most depth the team has had in the return game in a long time. As for running back work, I don't expect a lot from Hayne given the depth ahead of him at the position. He might get some running back opportunities, but they will probably be fairly limited.

The 49ers signed Hayne to a three-year deal, which is the maximum allowed for an undrafted rookie. Although he is older than most rookies, he still qualified as a UDFA. Hayne received an $8,000 signing bonus, and an additional $100,000 in guaranteed money. He is now due to earn $435,000 as a rookie.
