The San Francisco 49ers kick off the 2015 NFL regular season on Monday Night Football, on September 14. That game means San Francisco is now a mere 8 days away from kicking off its 2015 regular season. In the spirit of that approaching date, I thought I would steal this idea from our Oakland Raiders site.
Who wore it best: QB Steve Young (1987-1999)
It really was a tough call on this one. The list of players to wear No. 8 for the 49ers since 1950 starts and ends with Steve Young. And I mean that literally. He is the only person to wear the number dating back to 1950, which is as far back as Pro Football Reference tracks.
Of course, even if other players had worn the number, it is highly unlikely they would have exceeded Steve Young's career. In case you forgot, Young is in the Hall of Fame following a career in which he made seven Pro Bowls and was three times voted First Team All Pro. He also took home two regular season MVP trophies, and Super Bowl MVP. He ranks No. 30 on the career passing leaderboard, but considering his time in the USFL, his time in Tampa, and all his time backing up Joe Montana, that's pretty impressive. And how about this: he ranks No. 176 in NFL history in career rushing yards. Not too shabby for a quarterback!
