A week into the 49ers offseason and the names of head coaching candidates grows longer by the day. Early last week, rumors had the team trying to snag Sean Payton from the New Orleans Saints. That was quickly put to rest when Payton decided he would continue in New Orleans. Hue Jackson became the supposed frontrunner for the job. The 49ers traveled to Cincinnati to conduct an interview with Hue on Sunday, but left without a reported offer on the table.
On Monday, reports surfaced that the 49ers were granted permission to speak with Tom Coughlin. He stepped down from being the head coach of the New York Giants after this season concluded. The soon to be 70 year old won 2 Super Bowls with the Giants, beating the New England Patriots both times. The connection between the Niners and Coughlin is that Baalke and Coughlin share a mentor. Coughlin was a receivers coach for Bill Parcells from 1988-1990. A recommendation from Parcells will go a long way for Trent.
Along with Tom Coughlin and Hue Jackson, the Niners have interviewed Chip Kelly, Dirk Koetter, John DeFilippo, and Anthony Lynn. While Hue was the frontrunner last week, there are rumors that Tom Coughlin is now the frontrunner with Parcells' vote of confidence.
