The 49ers spoke with Tom Coughlin on Tuesday about their head coaching vacancy. Coughlin jumped to the top of the supposed 49ers wish list. Coughlin and Trent Baalke share a mentor in Bill Parcells, which makes the connection strong. Parcells' recommendation would go a long way in Baalke's eye. Trent is in New York to handle the interview with Coughlin. He fits the mold of a coach that has won the Super Bowl that Jed spoke of last Monday. But does his age affect his desire or ability to lead this team in a rebuild?

There are a couple of things a new head coach will have to think about with the 49ers vacancy. They would be: how is the relationship going to be with Trent Baalke/Jed York as far as control is concerned, what to do with the 7th draft pick, and almost $50 million in cap space. The new head coach could turn around the franchise fairly quickly if given the opportunity and makes good choices. The biggest thing for an incoming coach would be how much control over the roster Trent will have. Trent is seen as a GM that wants control over personnel decisions. A coach could have trouble with that.

Most rumors have the 49ers selecting an offensive minded head coach. With the 7th overall pick and all the cap room, a coach could revamp a bottom of the league offense quickly. Would a coach want to try to salvage Colin Kaepernick or Blaine Gabbert and use the pick on a skill position? This issue may be the biggest one in deciding a head coach.
