49ers opponents and travel miles in 2016 following Rams relocation

The St. Louis Rams are moving to Los Angeles, and that means changes to the 49ers annual travel. We break it down for 2016.

The San Francisco 49ers schedule was finalized when the 2015 regular season came to an end. However, due to Tuesday's relocation news, there is a slight change! The St. Louis Rams will now be the Los Angeles Rams, which has a sizable impact on the 49ers travel plans. When the Rams were in St. Louis, the 49ers had a 1,742 mile one-way trip to St. Louis. A trip to Los Angeles by comparison is 308 miles one-way. And of course, it's in the same time zone, removing one of the 10:00 a.m. games the 49ers usually have.

The Rams switch removes 1,434 in one-way travel miles, and 2,868 in roundtrip miles. With the change, the 49ers air miles are now 12,664 one-way and 25,328 roundtrip. Here is a look at the 49ers air miles the last five seasons:

2015: 27,998
2014: 19,938
2013: 34,316
2012: 27,314
2011: 29,226

The 2014 number included a road game in Oakland, but that was also a season in which they had one game east of St. Louis and New Orleans. They faced the New York Giants that year, but otherwise had as friendly a travel scheduled as they have had in some time.

Here are the air miles to airports for their 2016 opponents. They face the AFC East, but they also face the NFC South, which is essentially the NFC Southeast. They still will be among the NFL's leaders in travel many seasons, but their total numbers are going to come down a little bit.

To Phoenix: 620 one-way, 1240 roundtrip
