We're going to try something new and innovative here: We're going to give you your nuggets and Coach Watch all in one post! This is all part of Niners Nation's master plan to make things as easy, and innovative for you, the readers.
The San Francisco 49ers have gone another day doing, well, basically nothing at all. No longer is this like a 90s sitcom. The coaching search has turned into an insanely bad episode of Whale Wars. Believe me, I wish I was trying to be funny here. Several football clubs have ended their head coach search today, all pre-empted by arguably the hottest coaching prospect this offseason. The 49ers? Well they reached out. That was it.
The Connections:
Cross Hue Jackson off your wishlist, the former Oakland Raiders head coach and Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator is officially the head coach of the Cleveland Browns. Watching that press conference almost makes me want to cry with the optimism and class he injected into that fanbase. Word on the street is the 49ers didn't even make Jackson an offer. Whether this is a matter of them just waiting or deciding Jackson simply wasn't the right guy, this puts the search back to square one.
Remember when Mike Shanahan had a scheduled interview then no? Well it looks like he may be back in the thick of things. An Ian Rapoport tweet came out indicating the 49ers have interest. Whether this is because they lost out on other candidates, or the fact they just decided to put this hiring search into cruise control is up for debate.
Other Candidates:
Dirk Koetter was going to be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next head coach. And then he wasn't. And then, he was getting his staff in line for an eventual head coaching role. Whether this is Tampa Bay, San Francisco or whoever, it's safe to assume something will be happening for him quite soon.
John Middlekauf tweeted out today that Chip Kelly is still a candidate for the 49ers head coaching role. And that's pretty much it.
No one has called Mike Holmgren in awhile...
Scheduled Interviews:
NOBODY!
Coach Tracker:
Ben McAdoo was hired as the New York Giants head coach today. McAdoo was originally the team's offensive coordinator. He called an offense that was ranked 8th overall in the league.
Say goodbye to Tony Sparano. The 49ers tight end coach accepted a role with the Minnesota Vikings as their offensive line coach.
Vacancies:
- San Francisco
Cleveland *HIRED* Hue Jackson
Miami
- Philadelphia
New York *HIRED* Ben McAdoo
