Bengals do not hire Tim Lewis as defensive backs coach

The Cincinnati Bengals have hired a defensive backs coach, and it is not San Francisco 49ers DBs coach Tim Lewis. Adam Schefter is reporting the Bengals hired former Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle for the role. This came after inreviewing Coyle and Lewis, and reportedly pursuing Michigan secondary coach Greg Jackson. Vance Joseph previously held the role, but took the defensive coordinator role on Adam Gase's staff with the Miami Dolphins.

Lewis remains under contract with the 49ers, but there is no word yet on if he has spoken with Chip Kelly about a role on the new coaching staff. Given that the 49ers allowed him to interview with the Bengals, I would not be surprised to see the 49ers part ways with him. It seems like if the 49ers really wanted to keep him under consideration with Chip Kelly, they would not have allowed him to interview. But I suppose we'll find out more in the coming days.
