John DeFilippo to join Eagles as QB coach

This is kind of random, considering he was interviewing for offensive coordinator roles. We break down what it means.

The San Francisco 49ers have been connected with former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator John DeFilippo, but it appears nothing will come of the brief flirtation. FOX Sports NFL reporters are reporting DeFilippo will join Doug Pederson's staff with the Philadelphia Eagles as their quarterbacks coach.

DeFilippo interviewed with the 49ers two Fridays ago, and followed that up with an interview with the St. Louis Rams. Although DeFilippo's interview with the 49ers came before they decided on Chip Kelly as their head coach, there has been speculation the interview was more about offensive coordinator possibilities. Nothing was ever really confirmed with that, however.

With DeFilippo seemingly off the market, the 49ers offensive coordinator options are a little more limited. Jennifer Chan reported the team contacted Lane Kiffin about the job. Ian Rapoport then reported Detroit Lions running game coordinator is a "key candidate" for the job. Former Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach Ryan Day is expected to join the 49ers, but it is unclear if it will be as quarterbacks coach or offensive coordinator.
