Good Morning everyone! It was definitely a busy day for the 49ers front office today. First we got ourselves a new offensive coordinator in Curtis Modkins, and we also got ourselves a shiny new offensive line coach in Pat Flaherty. All I can say is GOOD. I don't really know if these hires will work out, no one does, but I like how we're hiring people who are in the league and have at least not flamed OUT of the league. Last year, the only coaching hire, or promotion that made sense in all of that was Mangini, and even that left skepticism.
The Flaherty hire sparks confidence in a decent offensive line. The 49ers O-line has been on a downward spiral since Tim Drevno left the team for USC, and given players plugged and bonehead moves, it could be argued it's the coaching. While Flaherty may not knock our socks off, you don't stick around on Tom Coughlin's staff for nearly 12 years if you're horrible.
And then there's Mangini. I read some speculation in the comments that he may go to being defensive backs coach with Chip Kelly in charge. Um, no. He went from offensive consultant, to tight ends coach, to defensive coordinator, only to get put back in with DBs? Sure it's a new coaching regime, but I wouldn't want to be in those coaching offices with Baalke, Mangini and whoever they hire for defensive coordinator. It just wasn't happening. As for an argument to part ways? NaVorro Bowman on a seam route vs Antonio Brown. That is all.
