The San Francisco 49ers have hired former Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker and linebackers coach Hardy Nickerson to coach their inside linebackers. Jason Tarver is expected to coach the outside linebackers, but is also viewed as the internal favorite to be defensive coordinator. According to Jason Cole, the team is still considering other options externally as well.
Nickerson is a Cal product, and spent some time in the Bay Area as a high school head coach. Prior to his two years as Bucs linebackers coach, he was head coach at Oakland's Bishop O'Dowd High School from 2010 to 2013. They won two league titles during his tenure. Nickerson was also an assistant with the Chicago Bears for a year in 2007.
Nickerson was a member of the All-90s team at linebacker, so it's safe to say he knows a thing or two about the position. The 49ers roster currently includes NaVorro Bowman, Michael Wilhoite, Gerald Hodges, Shayne Skov, and Nick Bellore. I suspect they add at least one more in free agency or the draft to compete with this group. After Wilhoite got hurt, Hodges got work alongside Bowman. He had some inconsistencies, but is talented, and could still usurp a role from Wilhoite.
