Golden Nuggets: Defensive Coordinator Hired

On Tuesday, the 49ers finally hired their defensive coordinator for next season. After Mike Vrabel declined the team's offer to take over the defensive coordinator position, the 49ers moved and focused on Jim O'Neil of the Cleveland Browns. Jim was the defensive coordinator for the Browns for the last 2 seasons. In his 1st season as DC of the Browns, the team's defense ranked in the top 10 in both yards and points allowed. But last season, the defense took massive steps back. They ranked on the bottom in both categories.

Also on Tuesday, the team hired a new tight end coach, according to reports. Jeff Nixon, who coached the running backs for the Miami Dolphins the last few years, has been hired to Chip Kelly's staff. With this hire, the coaching staff is complete unless Jason Tarver, the outside linebackers coach, does not stay on the staff.

The team can now focus on the upcoming draft. With the Senior Bowl this Saturday, the Niners will be able to get a look at players that can fill holes on the 49ers roster. With an offensive head coach, the 49ers will be looking very thoroughly at the QBs, WRs, and other pieces needed on that side of the ball to successfully run Kelly's offense. The interesting part of the Chip Kelly hiring is how he will work alongside Trent Baalke. The upcoming draft and free agency period will show us.
