And just like that, we have our first real national source on Jim Tomsula's job future. Pro Football Talk is reporting the San Francisco 49ers are expected to fire head coach Jim Tomsula following the close of the 2015 season. Mike Florio reports a league source told him Tomsula is out, but general manager Trent Baalke will retain his job.
As Florio states, this would be a significant embarrassment for the 49ers. The team parted ways with Jim Harbaugh a year ago, and while there appeared to be an extensive interview process, there was a feeling of inevitability that Jim Tomsula was going to get the job. Tim Kawakami and Matt Maiocco both were reporting before the season ended that Tomsula was likely to get the job if Harbaugh was jettisoned. There were reports Adam Gase was close to getting the job, but it still ended up on Tomsula. Some reports suggest the 49ers told Gase he needed to have Jim Tomsula on his coaching staff. There were a lot of happenings that remain a bit confusing at this point.
Whatever the case, PFT expects the 49ers to join several other teams on Black Monday that will be looking for a new head coach. If that is the case, we will have plenty to track in the coming days and weeks.
